Lesbians in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a state renowned for its strong religious and cultural beliefs found in Islamic Law. However, there are several cases of lesbianism being reported in the Kingdom. Althougah lesbianism is forbidden according to Islam, many people are wondering how this practice is gradually getting its way into this Islamic nation.

There have been several allegations on the rising cases of lesbianism in Saudi Arabia with many saying that the major case is the freedom that females are currently experiencing. Originally, cases of women segregation were very high in Saudi Arabia and women could only accomplish most of the activities with the help and guidance of their male guardians. For example, women were not allowed to go to social places without being in the company of a male (brother, husband or father). This reduced the chances of the woman to have time to create an intimate relationship with her female counterparts.

In addition, women were only allowed to study certain courses in schools and their education system; which was different from the males’ system, focused more on issues related to being mothers and housewives. They were taught good morals that gave no room to think of becoming a lesbian. But this has also changed and female students can now study any course, in any school of their choice. This great exposure and freedom for women to choose what to do have also been linked to have caused the rise in cases of lesbianism.

The cases of lesbianism in Saudi Arabia have been featured in various magazines across the world with the majority of the reporters interviewing people who have been to Saudi Arabia and experienced by themselves. Most of the lesbians have openly said that they just had an emotional feelings towards their fellow females and that is why they are lesbians.

Therefore, as much as women are celebrating on the reduction of gender parity in Saudi Arabia, such cases of lesbianism are becoming a challenge to the future of the state. Some have argued that it’s the reduction of women segregation that have made women to go against Islamic cultures and traditions to engage into these inappropriate behaviors.

It is true that change is being experienced in Saudi Arabia in all sectors of its economy and lifestyle. The nation is currently opening up to the rest of the world but such inappropriate practices like lesbianism is painting a bad picture of the country since it is an Islamic nation, with strong cultural and religious beliefs of Sharia Law.
