Makkah, also known as Bakkah, has been of religious importance even before the spread of Islam. The Holy City of Makkah was originally a staging place for spices along the trade route between the eastand the Mediterranean. The city lies between Marib and Sheba in Yemen, as well as Petra in Jordan. It is estimated that the city was first founded in the 6th century by Nabatean Arabs.
